Factoids from the JLPT kanji book

Here are some aspects in which Japan stands apart from other countries:koban

  • Japan enjoys more freedom from crime than any other country surveyed (UNICRI 2002). On the right is a typical ‘koban’ or police box which are a common sight on the streets.
     
  • Japan has more McDonald's restaurants than anywhere else outside the US (McDonald's), yet it had the lowest incidence of obesity of all surveyed countries in 2005 (OECD)
     
  • The proportion of elderly living with children was much higher in Japan than any other country surveyed in 2002
     
  • For the percentage of cannabis users, Japan was the lowest country recorded, with a rate about 20 times less than the next lowest country surveyed in 1998-9 (OECD)
     
  • The Japanese are less proud of their nationality than any other country surveyed (1990’s World Values Survey)
     
  • Japanese suicide rates in ages 15-24 age group was less than the rates in most of the other countries surveyed (GECD late 1990’s)
     
  • Japan has the least hungry government in terms of its tax take (as % of GDP - OECD)
     
  • Patents are held by 1 per 1000 people which is the world’s highest rate (WIPO 1998).
     
  • Despite having very few natural resources Japan has the highest electric generation capacity (US Department of Energy).
