Generally all examples in the text use kanji which is covered in the book; section 1 is self-contained and words use kanji from within the section.  In cases where one of the readings is rare, it is not always possible to give a popular word using limited kanji, so occasionally the words may be considered specialized or even archaic, most such instances are noted using the symbols below. Occasionally unlisted kanji will appear for particular words or where the kanji is close to one covered.

To help you, the gaigana used in examples reflects whether the kanji syllable respects an  ‘on’ or ‘kun’ reading.  You will see these are not generally mixed within words.

All instances of GCSE vocabulary which use kanji are included in the book; these are marked with a tick. In cases where there is only one ‘on’ or ‘kun’ reading and there is an unambiguous translation, the reading itself may be ticked instead of relisting it as a GCSE word.

There is a companion book in preparation which offers all JLPT 4 vocabulary, grammar and extensive verb endings with example phrases given for all words using only kanji form section 1
