Emphasis marks

,
Add either of these ‘side-dots’ to the sides of characters to emphasize them, like italics do in English.

ricebrown
This kome (from 米 ‘rice’) symbol is similar to an asterisk; it signifies appended information, (although they do not necessarily to link an item of text directly to a footnote).

Imported through the widespread use of computers, it is also used in a similar way to the asterisk.

!?
Japanese has the same question mark and the exclamation point in English, but they are less often used. For questions, the question marker particleか’ka’ fits the purpose. Like other imported punctuation marks (e.g. colon :and semicolon ;) they will often appear smaller and narrower than their western equivalents. Compare ! with! and ? with ?
