Types of Brackets

In vertical writing, brackets are rotated 90 degrees.

    quotation
Corner brackets (「」) are often used for quotation marks in written Japanese, which avoids confusion with the graphically similar ten-ten voicing mark゛", however variants of western style quotation marks may be encountered e.g. 〞double prime quotation mark, which may also be evident in the low position 〟or reversed〝. Corner brackets may also be used for book titles.

    square brackets
Lenticular brackets〖used in headings〗, and square ones〚 used for abstract syntax 〛are popular in Japan

    yama kakkoorhill brackets
You will see angled yamakakko or ‘hill’ brackets 〈single〉or 《double》 used for parenthesis, and other forms are also popular such as tortoise 〔shell〕 〔used to insert comments into quoted text〕
